One Christmas., when I was a very tiny child in Washington, D.C., there was a little playhouse in the back yard at one of the houses, and it was decorated for Christmas -- and the children inside were handing cookies out through the window to us, the visitors. So ... at Thanksgiving, we put Christmas lights around the window of the playhouse you see here, and my two grandchildren handed pumpkin pie with whipped cream on it out the window.
There is a staircase in that playhouse. It leads to the roof of the garage, for first-rate views of the enemy (and the friends hiding in the copse below.)
If you want to light it up, or turn on that five-second motion-sensor lamp, you have to plug the playhouse in to an outlet in the garage. The skunks would probably just as soon it stayed off.
Miracles of life in the 21st century --
Electricity.
. Ropes and anti-gravity swings.
Ponds neighbors drop by for visits.
Shades and covers that keep the rain out.
Paths through the woods.
A clearing deep in the woods where, if you line up, on the fourth of July, you can get a coffee ice cream cone from a young woman wearing a green-and-white striped golf cap.
Foxes, raccoons, skunks, and dogs.
Bathrooms papered with Alfonse Mucha's gorgeous girls.
Microwaves and laptops. News room to room first thing in the monring.
Sleeping under the stars. Watching them cross the sky.
Covered paths, fish ponds, water running though brooks which sometimes overflow, here and there, to irrigate trees along the way.
